What are Public Performance Rights (PPR)?

Public Performance Rights are the permissions needed to show a film outside of personal, at-home viewing. This includes classroom screenings, campus events, or movie nights hosted by student groups. Even if you own or stream a film, public showings usually require these rights.

Who is responsible for PPR?

The person or group planning the event is responsible for making sure the rights are in place. Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure it out alone! The library can often help check whether PPR are already covered through our streaming platforms, and when needed, we can assist with obtaining them.

Please reach out at least two weeks in advance so we have time to help.

How to request PPR through the library

If you’d like the library’s help, send us the following details:

  • Film title
  • Event name and a short description
  • Date and time of the screening
  • Who the audience will be (class, campus, community, etc.)
  • Approximate number of attendees
  • The sponsoring department, club, or organization
  • Whether admission will be charged

With this information, we can review available options and, if necessary, work with licensing agencies to secure the rights.
